Last week I had the pleasure of photographing an artist in her Somerville studio. Laura Hughes is a Contemporary Realist Painter.
We used her vibrant paintings as the backdrop for most of our shots but then stepped out into the back hallway of Vernon Street Studios to shoot a few more with the natural light coming in that afternoon.
A particular challenge was creating some big light in her interior, windowless showroom. I went back to older technique. Setting up a light behind a big sheet so the light can spread out on a huge surface and mimic the light of a big window. A “big window” we could move as we needed and highlight different vignettes of paintings.
